Eat Right for Your Body and Your Mind

Here’s another reason to eat right, it’s good for our brains. Insurance that our faculties will be sharp well into our golden years. According to researchers, not everyone’s cognitive function declines with age, and in fact can be greatly enhanced with the support of good nutrition and an active lifestyle.

We need vitamins like B1, B2, folate, B12, C, D and E. Studies show that seniors with higher levels of these vitamins scored better in overall cognitive function, and had more brain area. Conversely, seniors with high blood levels of things like trans fats did poorly, especially in the area of memory, language, attention and mental processing speed, and had a lot less brain area. That shows, says researchers, that not only are bad fats the enemy of the heart, but they can also be detrimental to our brain health.

Trans fats as we know can wreak havoc with our health, and are in many processed foods, bakery items and of course fast food. Please look to see that they’re not in the foods you purchase. Partially hydrogenated oils are another term for trans fats, so read your labels to be certain before you buy.

This latest research should give us all pause, and make us think about what we’re putting into our bodies on a daily basis. We want to be the best we can be at every age, why not give yourself the right nutrients now to ensure an outstanding quality of life well into your golden years.

Eating right doesn’t take that much effort, and when you read the studies and learn that what’s good for our hearts and bodies is also good for our heads, it’s pretty much a “no brainer.”
