Green Your Body

Let’s face it, even the most virtuous eco-warriors among us have been caught with our finger in the lip gloss pot! Although makeup can seem fairly benign — a poof of powder here, a swipe of eyeshadow there — keep in mind that up to 60% of whatever you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream.

Wrap your mind around this: You are not only what you eat, but also what you put on your face. Just because a cosmetic is on the shelf doesn’t mean it has been assessed for safety. Federal laws allow cosmetic companies free reign on what they make and how they label it. Thankfully, there are plenty of organic and eco-friendly makeup lines to choose from.

Consider these options when greening your makeup bag:

Read Labels: The first ingredient is what makes up 80 – 90% of the product.

Aviod Fuel Fossils: Petroleum-derivatives can also be toxic (especially watch out for lip balms and foundations). Sunflower oil, beeswax and minerals are better alternative ingredients.

PETA Cruelty-Free logo: Look for this logo/label. Animal testing is not only inhumane, it’s outdated and unnecessary. Familiarize yourself with companies that do/don’t test on animals.

As always, one of the best ways to green your beauty routine is to go minimal. Cut out products that you don’t really need, (use less product for a younger, healthier appearance). Give multi-tasking products a try, things like foundation/concealer sticks, and multi-color products, which can be used on eyelids, lips and cheeks.

So, in honor of Earth Day – and everyday — green that makeup bag!
