dry eyes

Yes it can!

You may have a condition called blepharitis which affects millions of people. Many don’t even know they have it.
Blepharitis is an inflammation of the eye lids and it can cause tearing. This tearing is a response to dryness and irritation on the surface of the eye. Other symptoms include red, itchy eyes, foreign body sensation and light sensitivity.

This condition may also be associated with rosacea of the face. It is important to be evaluated by an ophthalmologist who will look at the eyelids closely to determine if you have this condition. The treatment is simple, and consists of warm compresses to the lids, followed by scrubbing and cleaning the edges of the eyelid with premoistened pads made especially for the eyes. Special artificial tear drops, and sometimes mild steroid drops may be prescribed to treat the condition. Omega 3 fatty acid capsules (fish oil) greatly helps to relieve symptoms of blepharitis.

Blepharitis may be exacerbated by certain environmental conditions such as dry, windy cold days, and patients may notice that their symptoms get worse. Using a humidifier and wrap-around sunglasses can help.

Lastly ,this condition may also be affected by an imbalance of hormones and women and men should be evaluated for this.

Blepharitis is a type of dry eye which can be controlled and managed. If you have any of the symptoms ask your ophthalmologist about it!
